The hashtag has drawn hundreds of millions of views. The recipe is orange juice, coconut water and a pinch of sea salt. The promise is that it drains stress out of you like water out of a bath.
We make a calm drink. It would be extremely convenient for us to agree with all of that.
We are not going to.
What a cortisol cocktail actually is
The cortisol cocktail, also called the adrenal cocktail, is a mixed drink popularised on social media. Recipes vary. Most are some combination of orange juice, coconut water and sea salt, taken in the morning or mid afternoon. The idea behind it comes from "adrenal fatigue," a concept that is not a recognised medical diagnosis.
The drink is pleasant. The vitamin C, potassium and sodium in it are real nutrients. Nobody is arguing otherwise.
The argument is about the hormone.
What doctors actually say about it
Reporters have put this question to clinicians repeatedly over the past year, and the answers come back the same. There are no studies showing that this combination of ingredients lowers cortisol. Coverage in CNBC, Fast Company, NewsNation and ClickOnDetroit lands in one place: the electrolytes may help you feel better because you were mildly dehydrated, and the rest is probably the placebo effect plus the calming act of making yourself a drink.
Dr. Leana Wen has been quoted attributing most of the effect to exactly that, the ritual.
Which is worth sitting with, because the ritual is not nothing. Stopping what you are doing, making something, and drinking it slowly is a real intervention. It is just not a hormonal one, and calling it one is where the honesty runs out.
"Lower your cortisol" is the wrong target anyway
Cortisol is not a toxin. It is a hormone your body runs on, and "less of it" is not automatically better.
Which is why the question researchers actually ask is not "did the resting level go down." It is "how did the system respond to pressure, and how fast did it settle afterwards."
Our own best-evidenced ingredient makes the point better than we could.
In a randomised controlled trial published in Nutrients in 2019, healthy adults took 200 mg of L-theanine daily for four weeks. Their scores for stress-related symptoms, sleep quality and executive function all improved against placebo. Their salivary and serum cortisol did not significantly change (Hidese et al., 2019).
A separate trial found that a single 200 mg dose did blunt the cortisol response to an acute stressor, and raised resting alpha brain wave activity, a marker of the relaxed but alert state (White et al., 2016).
Read together, those two results say something specific and unglamorous. L-theanine appears to soften the spike, not lower the floor. That is a smaller claim than the internet is making, and it is the one the evidence supports.
The February 2026 lemon balm trial, including the part that failed
In February 2026, Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology published a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial on a lemon balm extract (Mathews et al., 2026).
The design is unusually relevant. Rather than measuring calm in a quiet room, the researchers gave 130 healthy young adults with moderate subjective stress a single 300 mg dose, then put them through five hours of demanding cognitive tasks and measured them at one, three and five hours. 106 completed it.
The primary outcome was overall calmness across the day. It did not change. On the study's own main question, the answer was no.
Two secondary findings did emerge. Participants on lemon balm performed better on the most demanding cognitive tasks at the five hour mark, and those performance gains correlated with higher ratings of calmness and contentment. The treated group also showed a trend toward calm recovering faster between rounds of cognitive load.
Three caveats belong with that, and we would rather state them than have you find them:
- The primary outcome was null. Anyone summarising this study as "lemon balm proven to make you calmer" has misread it.
- It was funded by the ingredient supplier, whose scientists are among the authors.
- It is not our material. The trial used a specific branded extract at 300 mg. Third Nature uses 100 mg of a 4:1 lemon balm extract, equivalent to 400 mg of herb. Different preparation, different standardisation. This is evidence about the plant, not about our stick pack.
The independent trials that hold it up
The reason we take the lemon balm evidence seriously is not the new trial. It is that two independent studies, two decades earlier, found the same shape.
In 2004, healthy adults given 600 mg of lemon balm showed buffered negative mood and higher self-rated calmness after a laboratory stress task (Kennedy et al., Psychosomatic Medicine). A 2002 dose-ranging study found 300 mg raised self-rated calmness and 600 mg improved attention accuracy (Kennedy et al., Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior).
That same 2002 study found something the supplement industry tends not to repeat. At 900 mg, alertness went down. More was not better. It was worse.
Three separate research groups, twenty-two years apart, all pointing at acute calm under load rather than at a hormone reading. That is a pattern. One industry-funded trial on its own would not be.
What is actually in the stick, and what we will say about it

Does a cortisol cocktail lower cortisol?
There is no published evidence that it does. Clinicians interviewed by CNBC, Fast Company and NewsNation all say the same thing: the effect is most likely hydration plus placebo plus the calming ritual of preparing a drink.
Is there a supplement that lowers cortisol?
Ask a more useful question. Research on ingredients like L-theanine measures the cortisol response to a stressor, not the resting baseline, and even there the results are mixed. Four weeks of L-theanine at 200 mg per day did not significantly change salivary or serum cortisol in healthy adults, although stress and sleep scores improved.
